In the summer of 2009, I worked as a UX design intern at Citrix Online. Along with the day-to-day design tasks of page layouts, buttons, and making things shiny, my main summer project was to research & design a potential webcam feature for the GoToMeeting User Interface. I worked with senior designers to lay a foundation for the future interface of their conferencing product, GoToMeeting.
Interviewed users and observed collaborative sessions to gain insight into the practices of online meetings. Researched the webcam space to locate potential areas for innovation. I developed two personas & scenarios as a result of research: Bob the coach, & Tom and Jerry the magazine editors.
skills applied: requirements gathering, user interviews, personas
Designed a UI that accomodated people's apprehension towards webcam, while at the same time utilizing its ability to provide social & communicative cues that enhance collaboration. Designed controls to expand seamlessly from the existing GoToMeeting UI
skills applied: ideation, sketching, Fireworks mock-ups
I presented the mock-ups and documents to team members and iterated on the design. After learning a lesson in surviving a design critique, I integrated their constructive criticism into a document detailing design guidelines and future areas of exploration for the UX team.
